Did You Get Your Mindful Meltdown Cheat Sheet?
Why should you trust what I say about meltdowns? That's a fair question… can you guess? 😉
Did you get your free Mindful Meltdown Cheat Sheet yet?
It’s right here:
While most parents vow to learn calming tools in the immediate aftermath of a meltdown, by downloading and then using the Mindful Meltdown Cheat Sheet, you’re actually following through!
You are taking the first step to becoming a more mindful parent. I know that’s not easy. Especially since there’s this myth that we’re already supposed to know how to parent our intense neurodivergent kids!
“I am literally in tears just knowing that I'm not the only mom who struggles with parenting atypical kids.”
-Anonymous
This is important: in the cheat sheet, I’ll teach you a quick self-compassion script you can repeat to yourself when you’re feeling defeated or desperate. Not only will it start to change your mindset, but every time you repeat it you’ll reprogram your neural pathways toward love and connection. Your new mindset will anchor you in compassion - even as your stress rises to a boiling point during your kid’s next meltdown.
If you did already download it, have you tried any of the practices yet?
I’d love to hear your experience in the comments. If you haven’t had a chance, this is the sign you’ve been waiting for to take another look. See what can help you feel more anchored before the next storm.
Have a question? Great! Please comment so others can benefit from your curiosity.
But why should you trust what I say about meltdowns?
That's a fair question… Can you guess? 😉
When my son Ocean was younger, his inner turmoil bubbled over into meltdowns that shattered my nerves. I felt anxious and powerless. The barrier between us as parent and child was so permeable, we were emotionally entangled.
At my lowest moment, I got some simple advice from another parent:
Breathe.
Be present in your body.
Trust that your kid can learn how to overcome their struggles.
Ten years later, I’m still the one Ocean turns to when he’s overflowing with stress. Now, I see his meltdowns (and the projectile objects) coming... and I don’t panic.
I am able to breathe and stay steady for him - most of the time. I can check in with myself, modulate my voice, and wait him out. Of course I never want him to suffer, but it helps him feel safer when I’m available to calmly respond to him, rather than reflexively react.
And I want that same presence and calm for you.
So every week here in the Atypical Kids, Mindful Parents Blog, I share tools and support to help you self-regulate your nervous system, even if the chaos in your home is unparalleled. With community and support, you will feel less isolated and more empowered to positively impact your neurodiverse family.
